Anujan Next up in our series of featured MBA bloggers is Anujan, author of the blog, GMAT and B-school app diary of a re-applicant. Theres a lot to be learned from re-applicants (even if you are a first time applicant), so read on for some serious insight into the MBA admissions process! Accepted: First, can you tell us a little about yourself – where are you from, where did you go to college and when did you graduate; and what prior degrees do you hold? Anujan: I am from the city of Pune, India, more popularly referred to as the Oxford of the East. I have done my entire schooling in Pune city and I graduated with a Bachelors of Engineering (Electronics Telecommunication) from the Pune University in July 2008. As of now, the B.E. degree is the only degree that I hold. Accepted: When was the first time you applied to b-school? Anujan: Here is an interesting anecdote regarding my b-school application. I originally planned to apply in the application season of 2010 (i.e. for the ISB academic session starting in 2011). I started off with my GMAT preparations and even appeared for the exam in mid-Nov. 2010. My score was 620. At that stage my recommendations were already submitted and my essays were roughly drafted. At that point I decided against going ahead with my application to ISB for that year. The reason for holding back in 2010 was two-fold. Firstly my score was way below the average of ISB which was around 710. Secondly I had around 2.5 years of work experience which meant that I would have been one of the least experienced students in the school where the average work experience is around 5 years. Thus despite having an application framework almost ready in Nov. 2010, I decided against applying that year. My actual first application was last year (i.e. the admissions season of 2011-12). I was aiming for the academic session starting in April 2012. Accepted: What do you think went wrong? Anujan: In retrospect I think I made mistakes on multiple fronts which actually summed up on the causes of my ding. The Schools: I should rather say school here. Owing to a variety of reasons, most notably the financial angle of affordability of fees and the course duration, I did not think beyond ISB. It was my only choice and I did not apply to any other schools last year. This was a mistake that I made (i.e. I place all my eggs in the same basket). While there is a lot of advice on applying to multiple schools I decided against it since I felt I could afford the risk of not making it to ISB. However I would advise my fellow applicants to avoid such a situation. It is always beneficial to have a b-school admit and not join rather than not having any admit. Essays: Despite knowing the fact that essays take a significant amount of time to draft I took this part easy. By the time I drafted my essays and had them reviewed it was around Nov. 20th. By the time I applied, I had my essays reviewed by a few friends and an ISB alumnus. I was pretty confident that I had put forth some really good essays. Alas, they were not. When I had my essays critically reviewed by a few experts after my rejection, I realized that I did not put my best foot forward in terms of essays. I spent a lot of words trying to lay the background for my essays and hence lost out on the actual content. GMAT: My GMAT was not up to the level of the school average. I took a risk on this aspect and was hoping that the other parts of my application would make up for the score. In short my score was not competitive for the school I was applying to. Accepted: What have you done since then to improve your candidacy? Anujan: The first step that I have taken is to improve on my GMAT score. I have been working in a steadfast manner this time and my approach has been much more structured. Another important improvement is in my work experience. Since my application in Nov. 2011, I have had a chance to go out on international assignments and add some international exposure to my work experience. I have had 3 international assignments since Dec. 2011 till now. Also I have been promoted at work. Hence in terms of my work experience there is a marked improvement in my profile. I have laid down a skeleton for my essays and I have also prepared a dossier of all the important events in my life till date. I intend to use this dossier as a reference for selecting the essay points when I write my draft essays. Accepted: How many times have you taken the GMAT? Do you have advice to offer applicants who have not yet taken the exam? Anujan: My GMAT score and history is not something that I say with much pride. I have taken the GMAT twice, once in 2010 and then in 2011. There was not much of an improvement in my scores. However I consider this experience as a chance to learn from my mistakes and I hope to score well this time around. Also owing to my 2 previous attempts I have some pretty â€Å"experienced† advice for my fellow applicants. The GMAT is more about the strategy and application of concepts studied by the test-taker. It is important to have quality practice rather than quantity. This test is really brutal in terms of exposing the flaws in one’s study and approach. For example: One’s strong point in quant might be Algebra and the weak point might be inequalities. The test normally has a question on inequalities and one can get a rather tough one at the start of the exam. One might answer it right but then either time, confidence or both take a beating. From then on it is a real uphill task to get out of the quagmire of a timed test’s pressure. My advice would be to Let Go. There is no point spending 3.5 minutes and getting it wrong. Instead once you have assessed that the question is tough for you try to narrow down the answer choices using your application and then choose one from the narrowed down choices. Also there is a lot of stuff out there on the internet which can leave one confused. So my advice will be practice using the standard study materials and avoid non-GMAT type material. It is important to study smart rather than slog hard. When practicing always practice with a timer and analyze your answers and performance. This is the most important point that I would like to make. Make an error / analysis log of all your questions irrespective of whether you answered it correct or wrong. It is OK to make mistakes but it is of utmost importance to learn from your mistakes. If it was an unknown concept then note it down and take some time to do some focused study on that concept. If it was a correct answer then think back on alternative approaches. How can you reduce time, how can you solve it more efficiently? Could you have plugged in some numbers, was there any formula that could have been used, could you have used POE (Process of Elimination)? The answers to these questions are what will help in improvements. There are many forums around and I can assure you that your question would already have been posted by someone else. If not posted by anyone then go ahead and post it and explain your approach and what you ar e seeking to learn. This will be really helpful in your preparation. Accepted: How many programs do you plan on applying to this time around? Which programs are you considering? Anujan: I am planning on re-applying to ISB this year. Other than ISB, I intend to apply to 3 more schools. I am pretty much clear that I want to apply to one-year courses only hence my school selection pool is relatively small. Accepted: Why did you decide to blog about your experience? Anujan: I decided on blogging about my experience sometime around my last application in 2011. However I was not committed to it and did not pursue with writing articles after the initial 4-5 posts. After my rejection, I realized that there are too many things going on and that I need to start writing a diary to note down all the happenings. Also, invariably, one gets varied thoughts and ideas during the application and GMAT preparation cycle which tend to get lost if not documented. Hence I seriously started blogging only from April 2012. My blog entries are an attempt to show my posts as if there were my diary entries. From then on, I am trying to share my understanding of the GMAT and general applications tips with my fellow applicants. The perspective of a working professional who is a re-applicant is something I am trying to present. Both these aspects are something that I did not find a lot of material on. There are some unique aspects like work commitments, work load, mental fatigue, etc. that affect the working professionals most. Similarly there are some things unique to a re-applicant like the re-applicant essay and the improvements in profile. In a nutshell, it is important to learn from one’s mistakes and I am trying to share my learning’s with everyone. Life is too short to learn everything by committing mistakes yourselves. Whats in a Proper Name

A proper name is a noun or noun phrase that designates a particular person, place or object, such as George Washington, Valley Forge, and the Washington Monument. A common noun, on the other hand, is not a particular place or thing, such as a president, a military encampment, or a monument. Proper names are uppercase in English. Types of Proper Names Tim Valentine, Tim Brennen, and Serge Bredart discussed proper names in The Cognitive Psychology of Proper Names (1996). Here are some of their thoughts. Following linguists definitions, we will take  proper names  as names of unique beings or things. These include: Personal names (surnames, first names, nicknames, and pseudonyms)Geographical names (names of cities, countries, islands, lakes, mountains, rivers and so forth)Names of unique objects (monuments, buildings, ships or any other unique object)Names of unique animals (e.g. Benji or Bugs Bunny)Names of institutions and facilities (cinemas, hospitals, hotels, libraries, museums or restaurants)Names of newspapers and magazinesNames of books, musical pieces, paintings or sculpturesNames of single events (e.g. Kristallnacht) Temporal names like names of days of the week, months, or recurrent festive days will not be seen as true proper names. Bill Bryson on the Lighter Side of Place Names in Britain Bill Bryson, a humorous writer of nonfiction who was born in Des Moines, Iowa, but decamped to Britain in 1977, then returned to New Hampshire for a time,  has now returned to Britain. Here he talks about funny names in Britain in a way that only he can. This is an excerpt from Brysons Notes From a Small Island from 1996. There is almost no area of British life that isnt touched with a kind of genius for  names. Select any area of nomenclature at all, from prisons (Wormwood Scrubs, Strangeways) to pubs (the Cat and Fiddle, the Lamb and Flag) to wildflowers (stitchwort, ladys bedstraw, blue fleabane, feverfew) to the names of soccer teams (Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa, Queen of the South) and you are in for a spell of enchantment. But nowhere, of course, are the British more gifted than with place names. Of the 30,000 named places in Britain a good half, I would guess, are notable or arresting in some way. There are villages that seem to hide some ancient and possibly dark secret (Husbands Bosworth, Rime Intrinseca, Whiteladies Aston) and villages that sound like characters from a bad 19th-century novel (Bradford Peverell, Compton Valence, Langton Herring, Wootton Fitzpaine). There are villages that sound like fertilizers (Hastigrow), shoe deodorizers (Powfoot), breath fresheners (Minto), dog food (Whelpo), toilet cleansers (Potto, Sanahole, Durno), skin complaints (Whiterashes, Sockburn), and even a Scottish spot remover (Sootywells). There are villages that have an attitude problem (Seething, Mockbeggar, Wrangle) and villages of strange phenomena (Meathop, Wigtwizzle, Blubberhouses). There are villages without number whose very names summon forth an image of lazy summer afternoons and butterflies darting in meadows (Winterbourne Abbas, Weston Lullingfields, Theddlethorpe All Saints, Little Missenden). Above all, there are villages almost without number whose names are just endearingly inane—Prittlewell, Little Rollright, Chew Magna, Titsey, Woodstock Slop, Lickey End, Stragglethorpe, Yonder Bognie, Nether Wallop, and the practically unbeatable Thornton-le-Beans. The Catholic And The Church - 1130 Words

A great number of Catholic members continue to leave the Catholic Church, statistics show. According to an article in the National Catholic Reporter, â€Å"One out of every 10 Americans is an ex-Catholic†¦ Almost half of those leaving the church become unaffiliated and almost half become Protestant† (Reese). Although the reasons for leaving differ amongst ex-Catholics, an important one is the teachings of the Bible, they claim. It may not make sense that the very same book that is claimed to be one of the final authorities in the Catholic Church, it’s the reason its members are turning away from it. It is the contradictory nature of some of the Church’s teachings –which undermine the word of God --the Bible-- that causes the members to leave the†¦show more content†¦This brings us to one of the main issues, Reese states: â€Å"The church needs to acknowledge that understanding the Bible is more important than memorizing the catechism.† Only, it seems that understanding the Bible is the very thing turning Catholics to Protestantism, as those who study the Bible using critical thinking, are bound to find incongruences between what the Bible teaches and what the Catholic Church teaches and practices. To start off, one of the most basic teachings of the Bible is the second commandment, which states: â€Å" Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image†¦ Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God†(King James Version, Exod. 20.4). This commandment is missing from the Catholic Ten Commandments (Catechism), but the Catholic Church claims it is absorbed into the first commandment: â€Å"Thou shalt have no other gods before me† (Exod. 20.3). Perhaps the â€Å"implied† commandment is obvious to the leaders of the Catholic Church, but to an average Church member who has no clear knowledge of the Sacred Scriptures this might not be the case. The second commandment clearly states â€Å"any graven image,† which is not equal to â€Å"other gods.† The Catholic Church has acknowledged that the commandment does exist, but it continues to ignore it, and perpetuate its transgression. Another recommendation which can benefit the hospitality sector as well as The Hotel Gracia is that they must have a continue process in the organisations of such on-job training programs so that the already existing as well as the new employees can also have an adequate understanding and improved kno wledge, abilities and skills regarding their job role. For accomplishing the objective of increased level of customer satisfaction, there can also be taken feedbacks from the customers that on what all factors they seek that there can be improvement in the services offered to them (Talwar and Thakur, 2016). And on the basis of the analysis of those feedbacks, there can be framed the training programs so that the employees can improve on those areas and offer the customers with mote enhanced and customized services and thus their satisfaction level can be upsurge. Recommendation to have a more positive impact on the on-job training in context with decrease in the employee turnover rate, there can be understand the issues of the employees by taking exit interviews as well as one-on-one discussion with the existing employees (Vasudevan, 2014). By such discussions, it can be analysed that which factors are need to be considered to motivate the employees and for resolving their issues. A nd those factors can be a part of the on-job training programs and can successfully result in declining in the employee turnover rate. There are also few other suggestions that are recommended of improved results such as there must a proper budget for on-job training activities for the purpose of utilizing the human resource in more efficient manner. There must also be an increased employee engagement and involvement in the evaluation activities so that inputs can be received from them too and the best practices can be scale up in future (Jehanzeb, Hamid and Rasheed, 2015). Conclusions The research report offers a significant response to the aims and objectives or the questions of the research. The aim of the report was to analyse the importance of the on-job trainings to the employees and it can be concluded that in the Hotel Gracia, such practices of on-job trainings are much valuable for achieving increased customer satisfaction as well as improvement in the performances of the employees. All the research questions are answered in a well-manner which has offered in-depth analysis of the importance of on-job training in the improvement of the employees performance. It has been concluded that in the Hotel Gracia has taken use of SOP as the on-job training method i.e. Service of Procedure that offers adequate training of all the procedures to the employees so that there can be enhancement of their skills, abilities and capabilities. Implications The study and the research confirmed a significant gap in all the aspects of the service quality which are analysed in the SERVQUAL model in the hotel industry in context with the services of The Hotel Gracia. For measuring the effectiveness of the on-job training, the SERVQUAL model is one of the best instruments that can be used in the study. Thus, the management of the hotel may take use of this tool for analysing and measuring the effectiveness of the training and the quality of the services attained from time to time. Moreover, due to the noticeable gap identified among all the dimensions of the service quality model, the management of the hotel must have its focus upon all such dimensions for enhancing the skills and services of the employees that they offer to the customers. Limitations The limitation of the study is that the sample size is small as there is taken interview of some of the organisational manager from the hospitality sector. There comes individuality in the opinion. It is essential that to have a wider scope and analysis, there must be increase sample size.
